Spokane County, WA
Spokane County is the most populous county in Eastern Washington, but outside the city much of it is private farm and timber ground. The 2022 Census of Agriculture counted 2,386 farms on about 572,000 acres, with wheat the largest crop by acreage, followed by hay, canola and lentils.
Stevens County, WA
Stevens County is forest and grass country. On its 944 farms, the 2022 Census of Agriculture counted about 236,600 acres of woodland and 152,700 acres of pasture against 66,400 acres of cropland, and hay is the largest crop by acreage. Cattle and calves numbered about 14,800 at the end of 2022.
Pend Oreille County, WA
Pend Oreille County sits in Washington’s northeast corner, bordered by Canada and Idaho. Washington ESD reports that only about 36% of the county is privately owned and about 58% is federal, mostly the Colville National Forest, so every private parcel matters. The 2022 Census of Agriculture counted 184 farms on about 37,800 acres, with hay the main crop.
Lincoln County, WA
Lincoln County is wheat country. Washington ESD notes that only Whitman County grows more wheat in the state, and the 2022 Census of Agriculture counted about 368,000 acres of wheat for grain on 719 farms that average roughly 1,540 acres. Livestock matters too: farms reported about 279,000 acres of pasture and 19,000 cattle and calves.
